    Default Moratorium on Earth Characters

So just to let everyone know, we are going to put a Moratorium on Earth characters. This is only temporary, and we're going to see how well it works out. This is to address some of the problems that we've noticed in play:

    1. Earth characters clique in the worst kind of way. And when they have discussions in the tavern, they are indistinguishable from OOC chat. We're not saying that characters shouldn't spend their time in the tavern chatting about their favorite movies and music - but it seems a bit odd that they would do this while everyone is turned into DRAGONS.

    2. Earth characters beget earth characters. When you have a group of Earth characters in public play, it's REALLY easy for Earth characters to mesh together, so people make more earth characters. And when you have a group of Earth characters in public play, it's REALLY difficult for non-earth characters to understand what they're talking about (Which often starts up an endless chain of "What?" responses that is unfun). So people make less non-earth characters.

Kaerwyn is supposed to be a realm of randomness, but the sheer number of earth characters from around the same time and place (2000-2015 USA/Canada/Europe) is killing that randomness.

So to combat this, we are going to set a temporary moratorium on Earth Characters. We are not going to say how long this is going to last, we're just going to see how well it works out and if it helps at all.

There are some exceptions to the Earth character rule:

    1. Characters from a different time and place than modern earth would be allowed. IE characters cannot be from 20th-21st century Earth. You can still make characters from the far future or from the way past.

    2. Characters from an alternative earth that is significantly different from Mundane Earth. Significantly different does not mean the same earth as ours with anthros. It has to have a significant difference in history, culture, etc. For example, characters that are from Earth where Nazi Germany won World War 2, and that 'earth culture' is significantly different from modern earth. (Note 3P "non in realm" Earth does not count for this, since it's culture, as played, has not been significantly altered based on the characters in play).

The "test" for condition #2 is if the character can genuinely keep up with conversations about modern day earth culture (9/11, Iraq War, Movies, Music, Sports, Etc). If they can, then they are not culturally different in a significant way.

Any characters sitting in the Wayside or the CR (That is currently being actively worked on) that are from Earth will be grandfathered.

Guys we have decided to take down the Earther Moratorium. It has worked for the most part and we're happy about that. There aren't nearly as many issues of clusters of Earthers in the IC with all the non-earthers being left out or pushed away.

If you do make or have an Earther character, PLEASE BE AWARE of the issue that lead to the Moratorium in the first place. If there's a bunch of Earthers, and one or two nonearthers, you will alienate them - especially if you start using a lot of earth references to movies, books, TV shows, etc. We're not asking you to change the way you play your characters, but try to be aware of this issue as a player and steer around it.
